What if there was a way for you to professionally and effectively connect with the media, people who like your music, and potential concert venues? Now let’s take it a step further. Imagine that there was a one-stop shop for all of your accolades, your bio, and a listing of your upcoming events. You know, like a resume, but not the boring kind of resume that you throw together to land a job that you really don’t want. No, not that type of resume. We’re talking about an artist resume, an Electronic Press Kit (EPK). Well, they exist and they’re a key component of who you are as a serious music artist. So what exactly is an EPK. Here’s the official definition: EPK, short for electronic press kit, is a pre-packaged set of promotional materials of a person, company or organization distributed to members of the media for promotional use. They are often distributed to announce a release or a news conference.
Knowing the terminology is half the battle. The next time someone asks you if you have an electronic press kit - even if you don’t have one - you’ll now know what it is and who to contact in regards to putting one together. EPK’s are important. In essence, they’re a visual representation of who you are as an artist. On many occasions your EPK will be the deciding factor that will determine whether or not you’ll be booked for a show or given the chance to be featured on a website or in a music publication. It sets the tone of how you will be perceived as an artist. Is this something you’re pursuing for fun in your spare time, or are you a dedicated to your craft? Not to mention, EPK’s provide the perfect opportunity for you to brag about yourself in an easy to understand way that aligns with you and aspirations as an artist.
So what goes into an Electronic Press Kit? I won’t get into to too many details, as the topic is important enough for its own separate post (stay tuned), but I will cover some of the essentials. An EPK is made up of a few vital parts. For example, your EPK should include an artist bio. You also want to make sure that you mention all of the media outlets that have given you coverage or featured you in their publication. Your EPK should also include some of the venues where you’ve performed. This is why it’s so important to start small and work your way up. If you are just starting out, be open to the idea of performing without pay. This could be a great way to get experience under your belt and some notable venues listed on your EPK.
